Perhaps it is precocious of me to say it, but I believe a great many southerners speak as if they are uneducated.
             My husband and his family are among those many. His mother speaks so poorly that rednecks refer to her as a hillbilly. I do not know the difference and perhaps it is because I am a northerner and have never been exposed to it very little. I have never cut off the lights, I am never fixin to do something, and I have no idea where yonder is.
             Before we moved to Rocky Mount, my husband and I lived in Goldsboro, where most his immediate family was less than a mile away. My mother-in-law, Brenda, who does not drive, would call me and ask me to carry her over yonder quite often. These trips were always stressful and she would give me directions by landmarks, even though she knew that I had no idea where these landmarks were located, and these landmarks were no longer what they were, thus confusing me more so. For example, she would say, You go over yonder pass the old Wal-Mart and turn where Mee Maw works till you get to Minnie's store.?
             When we first moved in together, Brenda would come over, seemingly every time while I was fixing a meal and ask meWhatcha cookin good?? What does that mean? Why does she need to add good to that statement? If she cannot reach us, Brenda will leave messages on our answering machine saying that it is a mergent. This is one of my favorite words.
             My husband says something that drives me up the wall he tells meI'm gonna take me a shower.? We have discussed this many times. I cannot seem to convince him that the me is not necessary. He has called in sick to work for me twice and both times when he spoke to my manager, he told him that I wasbad off sick.? Sounds bad, if you ask me. Sounds a lot worse than the flu, makes me think of a hospital stay.
