Camp Fear

The suspense thriller Camp Fear by Carol Ellis is a compelling story who's intricate plot, theme, characters, language and style make it an excellent read which you won't be able to put down. Therefore because of these reasons this novel should definitely be included in the reading list for future year 11 students as it can relate to young adults and their problems.
The plot in Camp Fear is very well devised and can be easily believed. The story is set in Camp Silverlake, a mountainous region in North America where young school children spend their summer holidays doing many nature orientated activities. Though holidays have not started yet and a group of counselors have arrived and must get the camp into good shape before any of the campers arrive. Unfortunately from the beginning they find out that there is something wrong. There's a deep, dark fear some of the counselors share. The fear that their terrible secret will be discovered. For seven years, they've kept it hidden, ever since that summer when they were campers together. The summer one camper didn't make it home alive. Now someone is using their secret and their fears, to play a frightening game of vengeance.

The theme of fear can clearly be seen and felt through many of the characters in the story. Steve has a mortal fear of snakes and was faced with one in his cabin "Sweat was pouring down Steve's face into his eyes and mouth but he didn't dare move to wipe is away. His fear was powerful" Through such striking phrases, Ellis is able to portray just how much Steve dreads the snake, which gives the reader a better understanding of how Steve truly feels, making the story more believable and therefore a better read
