             In schools throughout the state of Illinois more than one half of the freshman in high schools were taking remedial mathematics classes. Only 30 percent of the state's high school districts offered calculus, and only 8 percent of the states high school students actually take calculus (Kemelman123).
             Only 28.5 percent of the student's in Illinois take three years of high school mathematics (Lieberman90). While associations of mathematics and science teachers recommend that all students take at least three years of mathematics and science.
             Even teachers in Illinois need only meet the minimum standards in education. Illinois elementary school teachers need only one year of science in college, and junior high school teachers don't even have to specialize in science and mathematics if they want to teach it (Rassel88).
             Besides public school students being held to low academic standards throughout the country, they also have a higher exposure to crime and threats during school than students in private schools. This could be attributed to the fact that personal problems are more likely to interfere with students in public school than those in private school students. The number of students with serious emotional disturbances in regular classes nearly tripled from 1985-95. It increased from 32,288 to 93,335. Violent crime arrests involving public school children from 10-17 years in age also increased from 1985-95. It escalated from 305 arrests per 100,000 students to 507 arrests per 100,000.              These violent crimes might be linked to the overpopulation of public schools. Public schools tend to have larger class sizes and a larger overall enrollment than public schools.
