Eliminating prejudice starts at home
I believe that we can greatly reduce the amount of prejudice in our world today. We need to start by raising
our children to accept all people, no matter how different they might seem. If children are raised around people
who are not the same as they are, then they will most likely not think anything different of people who do not
look the same as them or believe what they believe. If we raise our children to believe all people are equal
from the start, then prejudice will slowly disintegrate over time.
People tend to be prejudiced because they fear the unknown. Whether the unknown is a different race, religion
or sexual orientation, people must educate themselves and their children about these differences. We, as the
human race, need to focus on not judging people before we know them for who they are. We need to look past
each other's physical traits and start looking inside a person to see who they truly are. After all, personalities do
not lie on the outside of one's body, but in one's mind. Children learn biases from important adults in their lives,
from the media, from books, and from peers. Parents' need to talk to their kids to give them accurate information
and to reinforce when their behaviors indicate a value of differences as opposed to a prejudice. Above all, parents
should ensure their words of wisdom are in tune with their actions. Sending a contradictory
message only reinforces prejudices and stereotypes.
I believe people need to stop "following the crowd" and form their own opinions. If we want to make a
difference, we need to instill in our children that being different is OK. Not everyone is alike. America is made up
