Garrett Hardin's arguments on helping the poor in India, oppose the views of Norman Cousins. The selfishness of Hardin's view points-out the filth of citizens, of poor countries, without giving help. Cousins's counteraction relates to Americans as being equal to the Indians, and with help from wealthier countries they can learn to support themselves. The prosperous countries have all started from scratch. They gained the knowledge and technology allowing them to be a wealthier nation. This knowledge can aid India into becoming prosperous.
             The thoughts of Hardin, portrays poor countries as useless. Hardin says the Indian government should be able to provide food for their citizens. Why should Americans pay for India's problems? Hardin also gives examples of the birth rate ratios between Americans and Indians. Since Indians have a higher growth of population, Americans will have to pay more each year. Hardin's way to stop this is to let the people starve, and it will cause a lower birth rate. This will make smaller numbers for Americans to deal with. Hardin uses the following example in his essay: just like a life boat, there is a 60 passenger maximum, when the boat goes over 60 the boat will sink.
             Cousins does not view people in groups, he views them as individuals. Hardin believes that poor countries can become prosperous with proper education and tools. With a job increase there will be a birth rate decrease. Cousins believes if the prosperous countries have patience and compassion, the country they are helping will eventually be resourceful and be able to take core of themselves.
