Development is a direction that every country should follow. Development is rarely distributed evenly within country, therefore core and periphery regions appear. Core is usually capital city, with relatively educated people. These areas are characterised by rising population through in-migration with mainly young age structure. There infrastructure is well developed. Generally, it is the most prosperous part of country or state. On the other hand, periphery forms the poorest regions with high rate of unemployement. These areas suffer from geographical isolation, being distant from core spheres of activity, having poorer access to and from markets. Infrastructure is also limited. Core-periphery model represents Figure 1.
             Example of country where core and periphery areas appeared, can be United Kingdom (Figure 2). The south, especially London is the most developed region and is characterized by high-tech industries and services. Periphery includes northern Wales, northern Ireland and Scotland.
             Areas more and less developed appeared not accidently, there are some reasons why core and periphery occured just in these regions. The main factor was resources. For example, thanks to availibility of raw materials such as coal, iron and limestone in Merthyl and Ebbw Vale formed core regions in pre-1920 in Wales. Added to this, people's knowledge about iron-making with the application of water wheals, driven by fast river water, was successfully used to power the blast furnace bellows. After some time, when well accessible coal got exhaused, mining techniques were improved, so that coal from lowet floors could be exploited. Basing on that, there were built available then infrastructure. Next reason is land relief.
