             During his army service, Harrison married Anna Symmes on Nov. 22, 1795. She was the daughter of Judge John Cleves Symmes, a land speculator with a patent for a large area of acreage in the Ohio lands. The judge was not impressed with Harrison claming that his daughter had "made rather a run away match of it." He, the judge complained of Harrison, "can neither bleed, plead, nor preach, and if he could plow I would be satisfied." The next 19 years of their marriage saw 10 children born. Including John Scott Harrison who became the father of Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd President of the United States.
             After leaving the army in 1798, Harrison moved his family 14 miles down the Ohio River from Fort Washington to the town of North Bend. Here he bought 160 acres of land for $450. On June 28, 1798, Harrison was named Secretary for the Northwest Territory by President John Adams. The following year, he was elected by the territorial legislature as the territory's first delegate to Congress by a vote of 11 to 10. In Congress, he worked hard to win passage of the Land Act of 1800, which provided liberal credit to small frontier settlers. With this legislation, settlers were freed from the land speculators and could now barrow money and purchase small tracts of land without being extorted.
             Following the division of the Northwest Territory into the Ohio and Indiana Territories in 1800, Harrison moved his family to Vincennes, capital of the Indiana Territory. Here he built Grouseland, a mansion similar in many ways to the main house on the Berkeley plantation, his father's mansion, and place of his birth. He served for 12 years as the Indiana Territory governor starting in 1801 until December 1812. It was here, on the Wabash River, at Grouseland, that Harrison spent the most satisfying years of his life.
