Symbolism is one of the most obvious factors in Kate Chopin's Novel, The Awakening. The meaning of each place and objects create major symbols throughout the novel. The ocean is a sense of freedom and solitude. Love is also incredibly symbolic throughout the novel, as can be seen in her relationships throughout the book. Art and music are also major symbols of transformation and change within Edna. There are many symbolic components to The Awakening within each narrative segment that serves to add meaning to the text and make Edna Pontellier's "awakenings" more clear. Understanding the meaning of these symbols is vital to a full appreciation of the story. Throughout the novel, there are there are numerous symbols representing Edna's detachment from the social norm of the times, and awakening and acceptance of her true feelings through the sea, music, and her experiences with love.
             The ocean is the central underlying symbol in the story. The beginning of the story is set on an island surrounded by the sea.. Many times the ocean is used in reference to an awakening in Edna Pontellier. An example of this can be seen in her first awakening. "A certain light was beginning to dawn dimly within her,--- the light which, showed the way, forbids it." (Pg. 21) This occurred while she and Robert were walking to the beach with one another. Afterward, she realized that she was beginning to feel for him. However, she knew all too well that these feelings were harshly condemned during her time, but she still did not want to dismiss them. Edna is once again awakened through the sea when she discovers her new found talent of swimming. "But that night she was like the little tottering, stumbling, clutching child who of a sudden realizes its powers, and walks for the first time alone....A feeling of exultation overtook her, as if some power of significant import had been given her to control the workin...
