Body image issues have always been a problem in America. Men and their want to resemble Adonis is a long time issue just starting to surface. Adonis is a gorgeous half man, half god of mythology. This god coined the catchy name "The Adonis Complex," describing the obsession that men have with their bodies. Many researches feel that men want to have this Adonis image because they feel that their muscles are all that they have over women, or that they want to have the "ideal" body. However, this obsession can be brought on by other influences.
Participation in a sport is one thing that can cause a man to develop this obsessive nature. The pressures to reach a certain standard can be great in sports such as, wrestling or body building. Men often feel like they have to live up to these expectations or their dreams will not be fulfilled, because they feel as if there is always someone out there who is bigger and better.
Another reason that men are obsessed with their bodies is their peers. From a young age boys are picked on because of their size. They are referred to as scrawny or weak. It is the "weak" boy that is always the main target for bullies. To avoid being picked on they focus on their bodies to fit in and be able to defend themselves.
Other men may just have an obsessive compulsive disorder. This complex my not be caused by women or the media, but simply hormonal imbalance. Their need and want to exercise all the time is unknown. It may be due to fact that they are obsessed with their health or being fit. This obsession with being fit causes them to do everything in excess.
