Possibility of Evil - e.o.e.10

             The pace of "The Possibility of Evil" creates a suspense that holds the readers attention. Shirley ackson does this by using certain techniques such as foreshadowing. She also creates suspense by Miss Strangeworths thoughts instead of words. One more reason that creates suspense is how Miss Strangeworth's desk is locked and neglected to be mentioned when the sitting room is mentioned . And not to mention the fact that the ladies name is Miss Strangeworth.
             Shirley Jackson uses forshadowing to add suspense to this story. She gives hints through out the story about what is going to happen. Such as when Miss Strangeworth is talking to Helen Crane about her baby. When Miss Strangeworth is thinking that "they were really the two most infatuated young parents she had ever seen." (pg. 224) This shows that something will happen to Miss Strangeworth from the Cranes for making fun of them.
             The author also creates suspense by using Miss Strangworth's thoughts which adds suspense because it makes the reader think about what might happen. Such as when Miss Strangeworth is talkin got Mrs. Harper. When she is talking to Mrs. Harper she "wondered if she had been taking proper care of herself."(pg. 224) This adds suspense because it makes the reader think of a lot of things- such as making the reader think of outcomes that might occur if Miss Strangeworth said this.
             The last way that the author creates suspense is by having Miss Strangworth's desk locked. It makes the reader wonder what could be in the drawer because it could be pretty much anything. The way that the author kind of doesn't mention it right away. In this sentence she neglects to mention the desk,"all the furniture was shining, and the round hooked rugs on the floor had been the work of Miss Strangeworth's grandmother and her mother." This sentence makes you think that something bad might be in the desk because it isn't mentioned.
