Part of business is watching people move ahead because of connections. The phrase, "its not what you know, its who you know is often used." However, there is a difference between connections and dealing 'under the table.' The ethical side of business tells you not to accept bribes but a construction company in Moscow made some bribes that are the subject of controversy. Mabetex was the company named in the kickbacks but this list also listed the President of Russia Boris Yeltsin.
According to the article, the company paid out $2.7 million dollars in bribes to ensure contracts. This money was then laundered in a Swiss bank and then arriving in New York. Federal investigators have seized information that proves that Yeltsin was involved in these transactions as well as his family. The bribing and laundering charged have been brought to the Russia prosecutors and now the clan is trying to get the damage control in hand. Yeltsin's clan might try to sacrifice one member hoping that this will apes the government.
When dealing with contracts and other forms of business, it is important not to let the unethical side of business takes over. At all times, one should remain ethical and not take bribes. Although they may seem flawless over time they will come back to haunt you as Yeltsin. I believe that hard work leads to success but if this is done illegally, only in the short term will it work.
