             In "Letter to Lord Irwin", Gandhi addresses the issue of the upcoming salt march he had planned for March 12, 1930 and the reasons for its necessity. This letter was written to Lord Irwin who was the British viceroy of India at the time. Gandhi wrote this letter to inform Lord Irwin about why the people of India are upset and why they must march and to persuade that Britain must release India. Lord Irwin represents the country of Britain; to convince him would be the same as targeting his audience of Britain.
             Gandhi starts the letter off by addressing Lord Irwin in a casual tone, almost as if they were friends. By not beginning the letter with something to the affect, "Dear Lord Irwin", this is to create the feeling that India is not just a stranger to Lord Irwin. By addressing him this way Lord Irwin feels more at ease while reading the letter. Because a "friend" is writing to him, Lord Irwin is likely to pay more attention and keep in mind to what is going to be said.
