This morning was like any normal day, trees rustling in the breeze, traffic lights flashing, people walking and driving to work. In Brisbane City it's very loud and noisy but when I parked my car and walked to the elevator ready to start the new day, something felt different.
When I got to the eighth floor of the Suncorp Metway building where I work, out of the corner of my eye I saw a bright yellow police barrier. It was around what seemed to be blood and a knife. This rattled me.
When it was my lunch break I got out of my office. My desk was filled with stacked piles of paper. My boss wanted to know why I didn't do any work. I was too busy concentrating on the police and wondering what they were doing. I went to investigate, myself.
As soon as I reached the ground floor, the secretary called out to me. She was worried why my face was so pale. You couldn't tell me from a glass of milk, she said. I looked at myself in the mirror. My face was white and my lips were pink. I felt like I was going to be sick.
I found a dark alley where I took shelter and tried to recover. There was a god awful smell. I looked down at my feet. There was the grossest thing I have ever seen. A DEAD BODY.
The body was bloody and armless as if a chainsaw had hacked it apart. There was something peculiar about the corpse and the alley. For a corpse with so much blood on it there wasn't much blood in the alley.
At that moment, I remembered the police scene this morning. It must have been a murder scene, I suppose. There was a knife and blood, but no body. I was freaked out about the dead body and police murder scene so I jumped straight into my car and drove home.
In my apartment it was really quiet, too quiet. Then the phone rang. It made me jump out of my skin. I answered it. It was my boss, who fired me because I didn't return to work.
Then as if things could get any worse, the door rang.
