             The term 'totalitarianism' was first coined as early as May 1923 in Italy. In 1925 Mussolini used the term "fierce totalitarianism will' to describe his movement in a positive way. Totalitarianism as a political concept can be seen as a system of government that is characterised by a single party that exercises power and control over all aspects of the state affairs and life. It allows for no opposition. A defined set of characteristics emerged in 1956 when two political scientists, Zbigniew Brzezinski and Carl Friedrich, developed what was called the 'six point syndrome'. Essentially it articulates that a Totalitarian state is one that has a "1. Single mass party, usually lead by a charismatic leader. 2 An official ideology. 3. Total control over the economy. 4. Control over mass communications. 5. A system of terror and police control. 6. Control over the armed forces of the state." All of these six points can be found to be true and to have existed in Nazi Germany except for number three – total control over the economy. However this political model is not widely accepted in many circles. It is criticised for being to static, and for resting on a monolithic nature associated with 'totalitarian regimes'. Another political scientist, Karl Dietrich Bracher, pointed out the problems that need to be addressed when dealing with the development of a general theory to deal with totalitarianism.
