Lord of the Flies is a classic novel that has remained largely popular over a large span of time. This is due to the fact that it deals with messages that have remained relevant over this period of time. This essay will discuss how Lord of the Flies deals with such messages as: humans inner capacity to be savages, the importance of civilisation and our wants versus needs. Also it will illustrate how these messages have been shown in the novel.
All humans contain the capability to be savage toward each other and other creatures. This capability is hidden behind a sometimes-thin veneer of civilisation. When the children first arrive on the island Ralph finds a conch, and when he blows it everyone on the island gathers around. Throughout the book the conch is used to call meetings. The conch represents democracy, rational thinking and order. At first everyone respects the conch but as they spend more time on the island away from civilisation the conch becomes less respected. This reflects the state of their society, and as this outer layer of civilisation is peeled off their evil side is revealed and thus starts their descent into savagery. The savagery progress's from little things such as hunting when they should be stoking the fire to the point where they end up killing Simon. This savagery is in its peak when simultaneously the conch is destroyed and piggy is killed as well. The character whom is representative of this savageness is Roger who shows the first signs of it when he throws stones at the littluns when he thinks no one is watching. As the novel progress's it shows that the others also contain this potential to be savage.
