The Anglo-Saxon ancestors of the English were delighted to hear their minstrels or poets. They sang of war and deeds of valor, of great heroes and chieftains. The Anglo-Saxons invaded the British Isles in the 5th and 6th centuries. Their songs told of the deeds of their hero Beowulf. In 700 the Anglo-Saxons first recorded 'Beowulf". At this time Vikings were still invading Europe The Myan people were still living. The writers of this time still wrote about great kingdoms with dragons and kings. The dragons would kill some of the king's men and the king would then call in the heroes. In today's society heroes still exist, but today's heroes save of us from planes crashing like bombs. Today's heroes are called in to battle in far away countries, lost in a sea of madness and death.
Beowulf is an epic hero, a good example of this is "and the strongest of the Geats--greater and stronger than anyone anywhere in this world." Today's heroes are real; they are the firefighters, police officers, and other rescue personel. Beowulf was the hero because he had supper human strength and societies morals. Heroes today are heroes because they risk their lives for people in need. Beowulf was sent to kill Grendel. Today's heroes go into battle to fight for freedom. Anglo-Saxons knew Beofulf was a hero before he fought the dragon. Today's heroes are often over looked until a great tragedy takes place and they have no choice but to be the brave ones, the ones that end up dying, but not after they save another human life. Beowulf is a hero because he fights evil. Today's heroes fight evil too. Beowulf received treasures and riches, but today's heroes earn respect and pride. Terror in 'Beowulf' was an evil man, in today's society terror is nuclear bombs and chemical warfare and yet we still have heroes.
