Dead Poets Society

             Throughout the years of our lifetime, we all go through many changes. One day we may act this way, the following day we may act that way. We go through life letting others influence us in good and bad ways, and they are all learning experiences. In the movie Dead Poets Society, one of the characters went through a dramatic change. He changed from being very shy and agreeing with everyone else, to being very transcendental.
             Todd Anderson was a new student at the school. His brother had gone there and his brother had been very successful. The principal said to Todd on his first day, "Mr. Anderson, you have some big shoes to fill." He had a lot to live up to since his brother had been a "perfect child". Upon being placed in a room with Neil, he was viewed as a quiet guy. He never wanted to be involved with Neil's group of friends, and when he was, he would not participate fully. Neil was one of the people that guided Todd out of his shell.
             Mr. Keating, the new English teacher, was a surprise and new experience for most of those boys. Mr. Keating taught them new ways of learning and made school fun. Todd's class was told to write a poem and come in to read it the next day. When Todd was called upon to read his poem he refused. Mr. Keating then called him up and made him do a "Barbaric Yawp." Todd finally got it out and Mr. Keating said to him, "Don't you ever forget this!" Mr. Keating was another positive role model in Todd's life that helped influence his new to come personality.
             Neil and Mr. Keating helped Todd out of his shell. He was no longer shy and soon became a more outgoing person. Todd became his own person. He was no longer going along with the crowd, he was doing things for himself, and others. When Neil committed suicide, I am sure Todd was the most hurt. He was Neil's roommate, and his friend.
