III. Inelastic Demand Curve For Illegal Drugs
Graph Two, shows a supply and demand curve similar to that of illegal drugs in the United States. The demand for illegal drugs in the United States is inelastic. Inelastic means that the demand for the product will remain almost entirely constant no matter what the change in price. The basic reasoning behind the inelasticity of the demand curve is that people simply want drugs in this country. The government tries to set up various programs, such as D.A.R.E. (Drug Awareness and Resistance Education), that provide drug awareness to individuals that aim to teach them the harsh realities of drugs. Other such programs the government instills are propaganda items, such as television, newspaper, and magazine adds that attempt to show the downside to drugs.
