Description of the World of Ragged Dick

             In the novel Ragged Dick, Horatio Alger describes the life of young boy who makes a living off of polishing shoes and then making his life better. We are introduced to Ragged Dick as a poor young boy who technically has nothing but himself. Ragged Dick's unique characteristics set him aside from other boys in his situation which help him succeed in his journey to success.
             Throughout the novel advice is given to Dick from other characters who see that he can become something in his life. For instance, when Mr. Whitney asserts to Dick, "Save your money, my lad, buy books, and determine to be somebody, and you may yet fill an honorable position."(291) By Mr. Whitney saying this he is letting Ragged Dick know that he too can better himself in life. He encourages Dick to save his money and buy books since in most cases educating yourself most often leads to success. Since
             Mr. Whitney is a much older and experienced man it is obvious that he was probably given the same advice when he was a young boy. Its shows that he feels it is right to pass on that advice and help change the life of Dick for the better since he sees potential in him. Mr. Whitney also says "Remember that your future position depends mainly upon yourself, and that will be the high and low as you choose to make it." Mr. Whitney in this case also advises Dick that he is the one that will be in charge of what he makes of himself. He also points out that he is the one who can go as high as he wants to in life.
             This novel leads the reader to believe that good things will happen to you in this world when you are honest, sincere, and do good deeds out of the kindness of your heart. Throughout this novel Ragged Dick seems to always lend a helping hand whenever he possibly can whether its helping a complete strangers or just a friend in need.
