n away to London. Many people are cruel to Oliver on his journey, and few are kind. He eventually collapses of weakness in a small town where he meets a boy named Jack Dawkins. Jack tells Oliver of a place he can stay in London and then takes him there. A man named Fagin runs the place that Oliver is taken to. Fagin is the ringleader of a group of young pickpockets and they begin to teach Oliver their trade. Eventually Oliver goes out to "work" with the Jack and another boy. The two other boys steal a man's handkerchief and Oliver is wrongly accused. He is cleared of the charges in court, but falls ill with a fever. Mr. Brownlow, the man whose handkerchief was stolen, taking pity on Oliver decides to care for him. Mrs. Bedwin, Mr. Brownlow's housekeeper, nurses Oliver back to health. Meanwhile Fagin is enraged that Oliver had been lost and decides to relocate his operation closer to where he found out Oliver was. Mr. Brownlow sends Oliver on an errand. Nancy, a girl who works for Fagin, and Bill Sikes, a house robber, kidnap Oliver and take him to Fagin. Fagin eventually persuades Oliver into returning to the thieving lifestyle and then sends him with Sikes to rob a house. They send Oliver in through a window, but the owners of the house awake shoot him. Oliver, Sikes, and the others flee the scene. Fagin is informed that the robbery had failed, and that they had left Oliver in a ditch. Oliver awakes in a delirium and unknowingly knocks on the door of the house he had tried to rob the previous night. The inhabitants of the house take him in a call a surgeon to care for his wounds. They can't believe that such a small boy could be an evil burglar so they convince the officers that it was not he.
