Human Cloning

             Human cloning is the much debated subject in society today. The world is divided in the ethical issue of cloning. Is it moral? Will it further our technology in reproduction? Or will it destroy society as we know it?
             In February 1997, a sheep named Dolly was cloned at the Roslin Institute in Scotland by Dr. Ian Wilmut. The cloning of Dolly rose the question, "Will humans be next?" "Yes, indeed," says Dr. Richard Seed who uses this alias to attempt to clone humans illegally. A big problem with cloning is the government's inability to regulate individuals like Seed from cloning without any government mandated restrictions. Actually, the Seed story prompted the United States Senate to consider (and reject) a bill to ban human cloning. Now, twenty US state legislatures are considering bills to put restrictions on human cloning.
             As a result of this new reproductive technology known as cloning, many negative aspects emerge. Creating another person with the same genetic code would violate human dignity and uniqueness. Individuals have a sense of uniqueness which make them who they are. A clone would eliminate that sense of individuality. It would also diminish genetic diversity, leaving individuals more vulnerable to disease epidemics. Possible and more frequent outbreaks could potentially wipe our society as we know it. It could also lead to the creation of human monsters or freaks. For example, if cousins or family members reproduce, their children may be born with deformities or defects due to similar genetics and DNA within that family. Evil dictators could abuse human cloning by recreating themselves to dominate upcoming generations. If Osama Bin Laden cloned himself, the generations to come will find themselves in a constant battle against terrorism.
