Pratt & Whitney decides to loan him $250,000, the use of the Pratt & Whitney name, and space in one of their buildings to begin the manufacturing of his engine. Frederick's first challenge was to build an aircraft engine of unprecedented power and performance. He designed and constructed his first engine in Hartford Connecticut, along with a handpicked group of engineers in just nine months. His wife was given the honor of naming this engine and she chose to call it the Wasp. This engine was the first of many Wasp series engines the company manufactured. These engines later opened the doors to commercial and military flights, as we know them today, and began the competitive race to perfect the perfect aircraft engine. In 1929 Rentschler and his team broke away from their parent company and began working on their own but they decided to keep the now popular Pratt & Whitney name.
             Today this once small company has grown to become a leader in the aircraft engine manufacturing business with companies located in several different states. Pratt & Whitney's corporate headquarters are located in East Hartford, Connecticut and located in these buildings, are the offices representing the focal point for engineering, marketing, Pratt & Whitney Aftermarket Services and Customer Training. Here they also manufacture commercial and military engine parts. There are also several different business units such as their Large Commercial Engines headquarters, their Large Military Engines headquarters and their Aftermarket Services headquarters, which are also located in East Hartford Connecticut.
