Dear Mamma, Open Your Eyes

             When I hear people say "you get wiser with age", the hairs on the back of my neck start to tingle. Really, the older you get, the more ignorant you get to the changes the world is going through, and the more stubborn you get to accepting these changes when they are brought to your attention.
             What I find most offensive and bothersome about the adults that I've been exposed to is the way that they feel that their opinions about the world must be correct due to there ignorance. They don't know any better, so they assume they are in the right.
             For example, my mother is a semi-conservative, British (which will tell you something right there), woman who was raised to have a stiff upper lip and to remain dignified and proper at all times. Her idea of good music is The Who, The Beatles, and other influential groups of her time. To her, rap music is nothing more than prisoners and ex-cons swearing about raping women, doing drugs, and killing people. While there is language and violence in some rap, there is also a story or message to be heard when you look past the image it portrays.
             Take Tupac Shakur's song "Dear Mamma", where he raps about how much he respects his mother and appreciates her love. My mother would cross the street if she saw Tupac walking towards her on the city sidewalk, and yet he is a man who has even stronger feelings about family than she does. She shouldn't just stay on the same side of the street when she sees him walking, but shake his hand as he passes by. Instead, she only sees the image: his tattooed body running around shooting people in the same baggy pants she hates to see her son in.
             Just as my mother wont accept my music, it seems that every generation is close-minded to the music of the next. Ironically, her parents complained about the unsavory messages portrayed by the bands of her choice when she was a teenager. Now, those groups are considered i...
