Analysis of Language Usage

             With respect to any issue, the use of persuasive language can be effectively implemented to present a person's point of view. Such language is prevalent within Col Colinson's article Col's Commonsense Column, where he attempts to persuade the reader to agree with him with respect to his views on the Excellent Solutions Inc. Youth Service Savings Scheme. He does this by appealing to their sense of tradition through his use of inclusive language, which also acts to denigrate those who oppose his argument – such is the nature of his patronising tone. This article is contrasted by Del Rossi's letter to the editor entitled Conscription by Another Name? Rossi aims to appeal to a sense of compassion and to a sense of justice. Her tone is more passionate, whilst at the same time being authoritative.
             Col Colinson, through his argument that the Excellent Solutions Inc. Youth Service Savings Scheme should be introduced into Victoria uses many terms and phrases that attempt to influence the reader. Such terms are exemplified in this excerpt; "I rarely have a good word to say for those self-important consultants who seem to make a fortune advising governments and organisations on the flaming obvious...but this latest idea has my full support." Here, Colinson sets out his intention in a forthright manner, whilst using informal, colloquial language that aims to gain the reader's support. Such language is enticing because it creates a scenario whereas the reader feels that Colinson is friendly and someone they can relate to, as such language would usually be used in relaxed and informal conversation. He then proceeds to use inclusive language by stating "I know that I can rely on you, the thinking public, to support it as well."
