Animal Farm

In Animal Farm, by George Orwell, there are many different kinds of animals present on the farm. Some are very learned, while others never took the time to study. However, they all had one thing in common, they were all mistreated by Mr. Jones. The animals exiled Mr. Jones because of inequality since he received more food and did less work than the animals. The animals started the rebellion with the dream of equality, however after only a short time inequality came back into their lives.

At the start of the novel, inequality was prevalent as humans had life much easier. Man rarely worked, and when he did he worked with much less energy " (m)an is the only creature that consumes without producing" (pg. 29). Even though animals worked hard and long hours, none of them owned anything or held anything to their name "(o)ur labor tills the soil, our dung fertilizes it, and yet there is not one of us that owns more than his own skin" (pg. 29). The animals did twice the work of the humans yet received half as much food and were mistreated horribly.

After the banishment of Jones, all animals were equal. No one animal had supreme power "(a)ll animals are equal" (pg. 43, commandment 7). All of the animals were friends, or comrades, and there was no such thing as hatred, except towards man "four legs good, two legs bad" (pg. 50). Since all the animals worked in equilibrium and were able to help each other with kindness, work on the farm was much easier.

By the end of the novel, there is a definite line between the pigs and the other animals. The pigs and the dogs did little or no work, even resorting to the changing of the Commandments to get out of work "(a)ll animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others" (pg. 133). In fact, the other animals even feared the pigs "...hardly raising their faces from the ground, not knowing whether to be more frightened of the pigs ...
