When Edgar was 6 years old (1815) he moved to England with the Allan's and stayed there for 5 years until 1820. While in England Poe attended Manor School at Stoke Newington. Later his experiences there became the setting for his story "William Wilson".
Unfortunately Poe's older brother William died young and Rosalie became later insane.
In personal appearance, Poe was a quiet, shy-looking but handsome man; he was slightly built and was 5 feet, 8 inches in height. His mouth was considered beautiful and his eyes, with long dark lashes, were hazel and grey.
Poe registered for the University of Virginia on February 14th 1826, the 2nd session of the University. He lived in Room 13, West Range. He became an active member of the Jefferson Literary Society and passed his courses with good grades at the end of the session in December. His rich foster parent Mr. Allan gave him a mere 100$ to cover yearly expenses that probably totalled up to at least 450$. Under these circumstances the young man quickly fell into debt and began gambling in an attempt to make up his losses. Poe racked up a huge amount of gambling debts while attending University and Mr Allan refused to pay them off for he stated that his father would not approve of them. When Mr Allan refused to let him return to University, a quarrel ensued and Poe was driven from the Allan home without any money. Poe later left to Boston where he published a small volume of poetry called Tamerlane and Other Poems, which is now such a rare book that a single copy is worth $200, 000.00.
In 1826 Poe became engaged to Elmira Tayster, but her parents broke off their engagement.
