Civil Engineering

             When I was a little boy my father bought me an erector set, I used to spend hours on end everyday building stuff from bridges to buildings. Ever since then I knew that I wanted to be a civil engineer and nothing else would do. Last year I enrolled at Michigan Technological University (MTU) and in four years I plan to graduate from Michigan Technological University with a civil engineering degree. After leaving my college life I will join the real world and start looking for a career.
             In the last three years Michigan Technological University has obtained a job placement for civil engineering that ranges from 85 to 100 percent. "Even with the recent economic rescission, we have had times when companies set up interviews and we have had no one even show up. They all already have great paying jobs lined up when they graduate," said Erica Denofre, head counselor for civil engineers at Michigan Tech.
             I feel very lucky with the degree that I have chosen to pursue; as Erica said before civil engineers are always in demand. This gives the option to choose where I want to work. Whither it be for the government or a private company. I can choose the field of construction, designing, managing, or even safety inspection. However, I already know what I plan to do, I would like to work outdoors part of the year and indoors the remainder of the year. That's why I plan to work for the federal government or the state in the area of road and bridge design.
             Each year the nation spends at least $5 billion for highway, bridge, and road design and the construction, replacement and rehabilitation of them. Although the amount of new construction and the number of deficient bridges have declined, the amount of expenditures continues to rise.
