Before Wadsworth could get word to Cutler the runner carrying the message was killed. Cutler's men took heavy casualties and were forced to retreat. Davis seeing the opportunity to capitalize on Union saw that Cutler's right line was right flank was breaking up, and broke up the ranks and lost all fighting capability.
