An Explication of Borges "The Gospel According to Mark"

             In the exposition of Jorge Luis Borges short story he wrote that a future indecent would take place and that its protagonist was Baltasar Espinosa, the story's main character. Espinosa is from Buenos Aires and is a accomplished public speaker. Espinosa is described as a lazy and disappointed patron of his own country. Espinosa was found France more worthy of adoration than his own county. He abounded in debatable habits and opinion. He described that he had very little respect for America but took pride in the fact the Buenos Aires had skyscrapers like America. Espinosa's cousin Daniel invited him to come spend the summer in Los Alamos and Espinosa accepted his offer without any hesitation. The reason he did not hesitate to take his offer was because he had a natural desire to please and he could not find a reason for saying no to his offer.
             The rising action of the short story starts in the narrator describing his Cousin Daniel's ranch. He is introduced to the family that helped run the ranch. The family was made up of a man named Gutre, and his son and daughter whose names were not mentioned. The family is described as strong, tall, and quiet people. Espinosa learned about the everyday rules of a country man. He became more and more in tune with nature as the summer past. Later in the summer, Daniel had to take a trip to Buenos Aires that was expected to last one week. Espinosa decided to stay behind and take care of the ranch because he was getting tired of his cousin's interests in matters that were irrelevant
             to him. The narrator explains what the climate is like on the ranch. He describes it has very warm. Then one morning a storm blew in that caused a nearby river to overflow. It turned the surrounding dessert into a sea. Some of the livestock drowned in the flood but the Gutres help Espinosa gather together what was left of the stock.
