Emotional Intelligence

             According to Daniel Goleman, success isn't entirely based on ones I.Q; it is mostly based on an individual's emotional intelligence. "Psychologists agree that I.Q contributes to only about 20 percent of the factors that determine success." There are many qualities that make up emotional intelligence and how they can be developed; being able to "recognize a feeling as it happens"- people who have greater certainty about their emotions take better control of their lives- developing self awareness, being able to shake off a bad mood, positive motivation and the ability to resist impulse. Most of the people have little or no control of how they feel, but they do have a say on how long that particular feeling lasts. Rage is the hardest mood to escape. To relive rage, or any other bad emotions, you can reframe the situation (thinking positively), or going off to cool down. One of the less influential ways of dealing with bad emotions is ventilating. "The techniques of reframing and distraction can alleviate depression and anxiety as well as anger." Positive motivation is the act of setting a goal for oneself and achieving it by having an enthusiastic, positive, and confident attitude towards that goal. Positive motivation is when you blame failure on the situation and not yourself. If you can catch negative thoughts as they occur, you can reframe the situation in a less catastrophic way. The core of emotional intelligence is the "ability to delay impulse in the service of a goal." This can be developed through practice by reminding oneself of the long-term effects/goals of that impulse.
             There are other keys to calculating emotional intelligence such as the capacity to know others emotions and the level of an individuals interpersonal skills.
