in the wrong hands. This battle lasted two months and at the end the French finally threw up their white flag.
             Vietnam was finally free. In Geneva, Switzerland an International conference was held to decide Vietnam's future. The country was divided at the 17th parallel-that is, 17 degrees north latitude on the map. The North, who was the Vietminh, named after their leader Ho Chi Minh; would have to leave the South along with the French. The South, were told to leave the North. The North became Communist and many refugees moved to the south.
             By this time America was clearly a world power, having helped win WW II and I. And although the Korean conflict put a damper on its euphoria, America was on the upswing. The United States became very concerned with the Communist rise in North Vietnam. With Russia being Communist the U.S. didn't like the idea of Communist controlling these areas. They (U.S.) were afraid of a domino effect, if one country fell to communism then why wouldn't the others.
