He does not understand why she is so important to him, yet he does not become intimate with her- just like he does not get close with anyone else at Blithedale. Coverdale tries to make a deeper connection, but ruins it with his harsh criticisms and opinions. He purposely breaks the ties that he has been forming. When he discovers that Zenobia has an outside connection with some of the other members of Blithedale, Coverdale decides to find out more information about the whole situation. When he finally figures out what is going on, Miles just sits back and lets everything unfold on its own, instead of trying to do something. He will not subject himself to any conflict whatsoever; he would rather just play it safe.
