The victims attempt to do this by lying to others to protect the abuser, becoming withdrawn from friends and family, and denying to themselves that the abuse is really happening. Feminists maintain that we need the current laws to protect the victims from being hurt further by the court system by being made to prove the abuse took place. Unfortunately, the abuse-excuse is being used as a tactic or bargaining chip by one parent seeking divorce and/or child custody. For most men, some significant form of punishment is imposed on them by the state. At a minimum, most of them are locked up in jail for anywhere from one to three days. Others, for a number of years. As in most of the cases, there is little or no evidence. The only thing to go on is the word of the two participants. Arresting the man, even when there is no evidence is not acceptable. It literally puts all men in the position of being second class citizens. (If this was reversed and men could do the same to women, would women be willing to accept it?) The ability to call the police and have a man unjustly thrown into jail is unacceptable. Women's groups deny it happens, domestic violence advocates say a woman would never do it.
