Late in the afternoon of a chilly day in February, in the town of P-----, in
Kentucky; during the antebellum period. This being in the 1850's was a time period
when slavery was accepted in the south. Eleven years after this story was published
(January 1, 1863) President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation which
virtually ended almost 250 years of American slavery (1619-1865). To the Americans,
slavery was their right as a person, African Americans were known as objects and were
often treated like animals. When the Declaration of Independence was written it said
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are
endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life,
Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness." Written by Thomas Jefferson, but at the same
time they reflected the attitudes of a nation in which individual rights were trampled by a
foreign government. But at the same time, Jefferson owned over two hundred slaves at
his Virginian plantation. At that time slaves were only counted as 3/5 of a person. This
novel is one of few that actually stands out as and exception to the rule that novels are to
delight, enthrall, and amuse their readers. No American novel has had a more immediate
impact on its audience. It was published first as a weekly newspaper, and a year later
made into a novel. Stowe's novel moved armies into battle; and when the fighting
stopped, more than six hundred thousand Americans lay dead, and their nation was
Uncle Tom's Cabin is a story about a Kentucky Plantation Owner named Arthur
Shelby during the antebellum time period. He is not characterized as a cruel master,
although incurred by serious debts, prompted him into sell some of his slaves. Problems,
which later caused cruelty upon the slaves sold. Mr. Haley, a low man who is trying to
elbow his way up...
