             Another woman, Janie Porter Barrett grew up in and out of trouble. As an adult, she wanted to help young African- American girls that were similar to the way she had been. Barrett began by developing the Locust Street Social Settlement in 1890, which was a place for young girls to go if they needed help, or just to get out of trouble. After this success, she went on to start the Virginia Industrial School for colored girls in 1915. She enrolled African-American girls who were in trouble in the community, and encouraged them to work and learn in order to earn their freedom. The girls were taught vocational skills that would qualify them for a job once they left the school. The most original thing about the school was that it allowed the girls to bring grievances to the teachers. This was the first time a school was interested in hearing the concerns of a student, and it began a trend, which forever changed the school system. Although African-Americans may have had a very difficult time with educating their children, they were not alone.
             In 1901, the United States government ordered the Native Americans to educate their children with the traditional curriculum of the US. This proved very difficult because most Native Americans did not speak English, never mind know much about traditional education. Nonetheless, they ran their own small schools among tribes, teaching students English, history, and basic math. The problem was that Ulysses S. Grant had given the responsibility of training the teachers to the American ministers and missionaries. Along with teaching skills, they were trying to convert the Native Americans to Christianity. This angered the Native Americans, and they often did not follow the demands of Grant.
