"The Arts: They Should Not Be Forgotten"
             In the words of Harold M. Williams in "Don't Ignore The Arts", he discusses the lack of arts education in today's schools. He states that "the arts are a part of the foundation and framework of a culture" (190). He argues that if our schools do not include arts education in their curriculums that individuals will not be able to coexist with our society and be able to identify and understand other cultures. He also believes that if children have a lack of arts education they will not be able to develop the skills to think on their own and make their own decisions for any independent or creative thinking.
             According to Williams, the arts are the building blocks to connecting individuals to their own artistic abilities and others. He feels that this is what actually bonds a community together. For example, he cites Richard Feynman, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist, who learned how to draw later in his life at the age of forty-four. The reason Feynman gave for learning this was because he wanted to convey his feelings about the universe. He felt that he could display his emotions through the use of art for others to identify with what he created.
             He discusses how our society communicates and educates through electronic visual images. He believes that computers are the new medium for creating and introducing art. He also talks about the aspect of America being a melting pot of diverse individuals and ethnic groups. He states that each group has their own way of communicating and educating others about their opinions and feelings with art to maintain and thrive on their identities. This he feels, supports his belief that a person needs to be visually literate in order to be educated about other events or subjects, whether they are portrayed in some form of art or not.
