Rock and Roll

            Soda or "pop" has become more and more a part of our culture. It was once a considered a treat but is now more like a beverage to go with every meal, and all times in between. Now it would be hard to find a household in the U.S. that doesn't have any cola in the refrigerator. To achieve this the companies must appeal to all people, they do this through different advertising campaigns. Different pops use different advertising techniques to appeal to the certain groups of people. Mountain Dew and Coca-Cola are two companies that try to achieve two very different images.
             Mountain Dew has tried to take advantage of the whole "extreme sports" explosion that has become so popular in the last few years. They do this by incorporating them into there advertisements. They often include people skateboarding, snow boarding, and rollerblading. They always have some extreme twist to push it even further. Like one for instance, there is a U.F.O flying down the mountain like a snowboard, only for three teenaged kids to be beamed down, and then they all drink a Mountain Dew.
             There focus is on the younger, "hipper" crowd. They want there drink to reflect the same image as extreme sports do. It's a free, adventurous, young feeling image.
             They try to appeal to the younger crowd in most aspects. The younger generations are the ones that are mostly taking part in these activities. However, this can also have some appeal to the older generations as well. Since they are not taking part in these sorts of activities, many of them don't feel as young as they would really like to be. So Mountain Dew also targets some of the older generation. The ones that feel by drinking this "cool" soda, they some how become more of a part of this younger, thrill seeking, generation.
