Q. Disguise are common in this play. Discuss the purpose these disguises serve.
             In the play "Twelf Night", disguises play an overwhelmingly large role. The characters use the disguises for personnel gain, protection, emotional reasons, and psychological reasons. They ad lots of tension and confusion between the characters with the constant threat of being caught, or in the case of psychological disguises criticised and being forced to having the disguise become so much more intense that it runs there life. Disguises are a part of the play in many different ways, in the following the purpose and effects that some of these disguises serve will be analysed.
             The first main role a disguise plays, is that of Viola as Cesario. Cesario is a pageboy, but when Viola is dressed up like a boy she looks very masculine. Viola disguised herself as Cesario to obtain employment under the Duke Orsinio. She did this because it was a custom that a woman could not be a servant to someone in the position of the Duke Orsinio. When Viola is disguised it causes much confusion to other characters when small hints and clues arise that Cesario is not who he seems to be. A character who did not catch on because he missed various clues is the Duke Orsinio, when he would be undressing or bathing Cesario would get vary nervous and uncomfortable. Only a select few of the characters catch on before he is unmasked. Olivia does not run into trouble so much with the confusion, but with the emotional damage she suffers. The emotional damage begins when Olivia begins to fall for Cesario, but Viola is so afraid to lose her employment with the Duke that she dose not tell her that she is actually a girl. As the play goes on it becomes more and more difficult to reveal her true identity to Olivia as the emotional damage would be even greater.
