d 10.7 million immigrants. In the 1990's, over fifteen million immigrants entered the country, many of which are illegal. Every year, about 2.5 million illegal immigrants cross the border. Most of them leave, but more than 500,000 of them stay. Also, birthrates of immigrants are higher than that of native-born Americans. One-third of the nations population growth in the 1980's has come from immigration. As Virginia D. Abernethy states in her book Population Politics, "In California, where immigration from Mexico is a potent factor, Hispanic fertility rose from 3.16 in 1982, to 3.5 by 1988, and to over 3.9 in 1990." She also notes that native-born black women average 1.8 children, but foreign black women have 2.7 children. Other immigrant groups, such as South and Southeast Asians, Filipinos, and Russians have large families as well.
