Ecstasy

             Since the first Europeans landed in North America, the American Dream has been to achieve freedom and a fuller, happier, and richer life. Each succeeding generation has achieved the American Dream at a higher level than the previous generation. In many ways, this American Dream began to be shattered with the introduction of coke and crack cocaine in the mid 1980's. Not only were the lives of cocaine users destroyed, the innocent children of cocaine using mothers, crack babies, were permanently and tragically effected. This generation of crack users was unable to achieve the American Dream and most of the crack babies wound up in foster care at a tremendous cost to society. However, as the use of crack declines, a new "drug of choice" is exploding upon society. This drug threatens to destroy the youth of today just as cocaine has done. Ecstasy, the drug of choice for the late 90's and the early millennia, thwarts the youth of America by destroying their mentality at a young age by luring them into a state of euphoria. However, this state of euphoria has a darker side, because it destroys the user's brain, causing severe and permanent psychological damage. Sadly, it has come to be that the use of this drug increases at an alarming rate each year. According to the Office of National Drug Control Policy, in 1999 5.5% of college students reported that they had used Ecstasy in the past year. However, one year later, in the year 2000, 8.2% of 12th graders, 5.4% of 10th graders, and 3.1% of 8th graders reported using Ecstasy in the past 12 months. The US Customs office seized 750,000 tablets of MDMA (Ecstasy) in 1998, 3 million tablets during 1999 and 4 million in 2000.
