When he was brought in as CEO, stock prices were way below market value and it took Smith twenty years to turn the paper company into the leading paper-based consumer products company in the world. Smith, who's described as a farm-town boy from Indiana, was diagnosed with cancer after only two months of being CEO leaving him with a predicted year or less to live. But, this didn't stop his motivation or drive to make Kimberly-Clarke as successful as possible. Smith made one of the biggest decisions in company history when he informed everyone to "sell the mills". After selling the mills, Smith invested in the consumer business. This was a huge decision to make, but the point here is that he did this for the good of the company, to form a legacy after he retires. Against all odds, Smith turned a struggling company into a great company by simply listening to his will to succeed. After retiring, he made a quote that describes why he is a Level 5 leader. When asked about his job performance he said, "I never stopped trying to become qualified for the job". I found this story pretty inspiring, because it shows by putting the needs of others first, the company in this case, that the rewards are great.
