used by the small percent of elderly who are licensed over the age of sixty-five. This miniscule percent of the driving population is an elite killing force. Just the eighteen percent of drivers who are elderly, over the age of sixty-five, caused seventeen percent of the motor vehicle caused deaths in 1996. Furthermore, seventeen percent of those who were killed by elderly drivers in the year 1996 were pedestrians and an astonishing eighty percent were passenger occupants of their own vehicle. All were completely innocent victims of the government's lack of laws set to the elderly driving community of Florida. People aged seventy and older have more motor vehicle deaths per 100,000 people than any other group excluding teen drivers. Studies show that fatal crash rates rise sharply at the age of 65 (Carney 1). With this evidence, it seems the most helpful action to be made by the Department of Motor Vehicles would be to increase the strictness of the laws already set to senior citizen drivers, as there are very few.
