Some people feel that money can buy happiness; others believe that it can't. In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jay Gatsby chooses to use his money so that it will, in his point of view, buy him happiness. In similar fashion, in the novel The Gold Coast by Nelson Demille, Frank Bellarosa also thinks that money can bring about happiness. The two characters feel that money can buy happiness but they do not succeed in their conquests for happiness.
             Both characters, Jay Gatsby and Frank Bellarosa, think that happiness can be brought using money by buying certain things. In Jay's case, he does not want to be notoriously known. In the book, a couple of young ladies say that he once killed a man so Jay buys a house and invites people to frequent parties to show he is not so bad. Everyone knows that he is a bootlegger and that he sells and does things illegally. To show that he is not bad he invites people to frequent parties. In Frank's case, he also does not want to be disgracefully known. As soon as he moved to Long Island, everyone knew that he was the leader of the Italian mafia. Because of this view from people about him, he buys land to show to that he is not a bad guy. Frank also gives out money to church. For example at his church Santa Lucia, his priest Father Chiaro asked Frank for fifty thousand dollars to fix the church, he gladly gave him the money because they knew that Frank already had the money.
             Motivation brings about the belief that money can buy happiness in these two characters. Jay is motivated by love and his fellow residents in East Egg. Daisy motivates Jay because Jay was madly in love with her before he went to war and after he came back. The green light in Daisy's dock signified this love. Since Jay wanted to be accepted as a WASP, this provoked him to use his money and show off that he is wealthy. Frank is motivated by Susan Sutter and what she does be
