Another important factor in the VM's success was the military leadership provided by Vo Nguyen Giap. Giap was so cautious and meticulous in planning for military operations that they were often delayed. Historians tend to case Giap in larger than life terms. Although he had flashes of brilliance as a strategic and tactical military genius, there was a far greater number of defeats clearly due to serious shortcomings as a military commander, a tendency to hold on too long an inclination to try and make a bold second strike under extreme risks or to secure areas that had no military importance.
