inking of the Titanic. The White Star Line Company was found to be negligent in many areas. They had just built the largest ship in the world and the crew would need special instructions on safe navigation, but none were given (British Parliament, 37). The head of the company, Joseph Bruce Ismay, was told during the trip by Captain Smith that it might be safer to slow down. Ismay wanted to grab even more attention for his ship for being one of the fastest around, so he talked Smith out of the idea. Although the ship was never officially referred to as unsinkable by the White Star Line, the company seemed to have perhaps lulled their passengers into a false sense of security and safety by not telling them of the ship deficiencies (United States Senate, 260a). The company did not provide the needed equipment for safe operation of the ship. When the ship left England, the company was fully aware their lookouts did not have binoculars (British Parliament, 15). Their excuse when this fact was put forth in the hearings was that the binoculars would not help with anything on a dark night. The White Star Line Company did not include search lights on the ship ( British Parliament, 39 ). Two officers testified at the United States Senate hearings that searchlights would have helped to spot the fatal iceberg sooner (United States Senate, 102).
