Alcohol is the most widely used drug among youth. This is a large problem in the world today. Many teens anywhere from ages 12 or 13 to 20 years of age are victims of underage drinking. The statistics of underage drinking are outrageous. Billions have died because of alcohol related car crashes. However, there are many organizations and awareness programs to put an end to underage drinking which are a great help to everyone with this problem.
             The statistics of this subject are surprisingly shocking. These statistics are given to make people aware of the harm that underage drinking causes. For example, junior and senior high school students drink 35 percent of all wine coolers sold in the United States and they also consume 1.1 billion cans of beer. Also, two thirds of teenagers who drink can buy their own alcohol. I think that places that sell alcohol should be more persistent with carding young people. A lot of places will sell alcohol to a young person whom they are hesitant about whether or not they are legally allowed to buy alcohol just so that they can get the sale. This makes it easier for teens to get their hands on the alcohol and hence they take advantage of the situation. In fact, 87 percent of high school students have used alcohol. These numbers are significantly high and could be reduced if there was just more awareness of the dangers of underage drinking. Consuming alcohol also effects a student's progress in school. Students with grade point averages of D or F drink three times as much as students who earn A's. Underage drinking is also very costly. Alcohol consumption and its consequences have been estimated to cost our society $86 billion each year. Car repairs, hospital bills, and costs of lawyers have all contributed to this.
