Elder immigrants

             To the best of my knowledge, the United States is the most diverse country in the world. Every year, thousands of immigrants come to the United States. My family is among those immigrants. My father and mother were at the age of sixty five and fifty when we entered the country. They had many difficulties when they tried to learn English. Factors that affect their learning abilities as well as other elder immigrants include: physical, social and cognitive factors (Weinstein-Shr 1).
             As adults grow older, their visual and hearing abilities are reduced a lot. These physical effects make it difficult for older people to learn a new language. They are not able to see and hear clearly from the lecture. As a result, they do not keep up with the work and understand as well as younger people. Also, it is hard for them to keep track of all the new words.
             The social factors that affect older immigrants learning abilities are that they may uncomfortable learning a new language with younger people. They feel isolated and discouraged by comparing themselves to others. Their needs and pace of learning do not match with others. They might be slower and have difficulties with the new language.
             These adults have strategies for learning that they have been using for their life (Weinstein-Shr 1). It would be difficult for them to adopt new techniques to learn a new language. They are used to their native language, and now they have to learn everything from the beginning. Weinstein-Shr suggests educator "observe how they learn best, to be flexible in teaching approach, and to draw on their life experiences" (Weinstein-Shr1).
             As more and more immigrants are coming to the United States every year, the issue of adults adopting and learning new language and culture can not be ignored.
