A Comparison of Alice Walker and Celie from The Color Purple
             In Alice Walker's The Color Purple, there are many similarities between the main character, Celie, and Alice Walker. Some examples are both are from poor black families from the south, both have issues with their appearance, and both have bi-sexual tendencies. There are some differences between the two also, such as, in The Color Purple, Celie does not have any positive male figures in her life, and Alice Walker does.
             Alice Walker was born in Eatonton, Georgia February 9, 1944. She was the daughter of poor sharecroppers, and the youngest of eight children (Bloom 229). Since she was born in the early part of the twentieth century, "she grew up in the midst of violent racism, which combined with her family's poverty left a permanent impression on her writing" (Grade Saver). This can be seen through her characterization of Celie. Celie is an uneducated young black girl from Georgia who comes from a very poor family.
             Another thing about Celie that is similar to Alice Walker is their appearance. Celie is considered, by herself and by other characters in the book, to be very unattractive. In the book, Mr._____ wants to marry Celie's sister Nettie, but their father convinces him to marry Celie instead because, for one reason, she is not as pretty as her sister is. Mr._____ only agrees to the deal because she can cook and clean, and her father includes a cow (Rose 20). Alice Walker had much the same feelings about herself after an accident where one of her older brothers shot a B.B. in to her eye, which caused her to loose sight in her right eye and facially disfigured her, when she was only eight (Winchell xiii). Before the accident, she was a very outgoing child, but afterward she mostly kept to herself reading and studying.
