they have a great interest in the opposite sex. Most of these feeling are due to curiosity and hormones. Around dinner time Thomas heads home to his unhappy household just hoping that his father be too drunk to beat him and his grandfather still awake so he will have someone to talk to . Thomas enjoys talking with his grandfather because when he has something that is important to him his grandfather does nothing but listen. He never criticizes him nor judge him. It is very safe to say that Grandpa is the only one that truly loves Thomas. Because of this factor their relationship does nothing but grow and advance in love.
Thomas's interaction with his parents and sister is very minimal and he avoids it as much as possible. Over the course of the book Thomas's sister, Beverly, is out of the county as an exchange student. Not many interactions occur between Thomas and Beverly due to her never being home. The one bond that they have is to try their best to avoid their parents constant fighting and talk of divorce.
Thomas and his parents have no natural connection nor do any of them desire one. Thomas often feels that he was adopted and this was God's idea of a good joke.
