Separation of Church and State

              Prayers and bible readings in school are forbidden under the First Amendment
             to the Constitution. In order to maintain religious liberty in the United States of America,
             religion in school and school-sponsored events must be discontinued. This
             constitutional mandate of religious neutrality in schools is supported by Americans
             United for the Separation of Church and State and various religious minorities. America
             has more than 2,000 recognized faith groups and it is the state's duty to have public
             schools which serve these students equally and non intrusively of their background and
             In the making of our constitution, our forefathers tried to uphold the rights
             ofevery citizen of the United States. In the Bill of Rights, which are the first ten
             amendments to the Constitution, they provided for other rights, such as freedom of
             religion, speech, and press. The First Amendment actually says "Congress shall make
             no law respecting the establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercises
             thereof." There must be a clean separation of church and state in America. Many
             argue that our Bill of Rights guarantees the freedom of religion in two parts. One is the
             Establishment Clause, which prohibits the government from favoring one religion over
             another, in other words, establishing a nationally practiced religion. This also says that
             the government cannot use taxes paid by citizens to support any religion. The Free-
             Exercise Clause prohibits the passing of laws that hinder citizens because of their
